Types of support

We run a number of specialised services to support people into recovery. These include:

  • One to one sessions
  • Medical prescribing
  • Structured day programme
  • Group sessions       
  • Needle exchange
  • Education, training and employment

One to one sessions

When you first start with Addaction you will be allocated your own worker. They will be your main point of contact and will help you to work out what you want to achieve during treatment. Your key worker will support you to access a range of different services, both with us and through other agencies. The things you talk about with them will be confidential.

We place recovery at the heart of the support that you will receive. In our view:

  • Recovery is a process, not a single event and will be different for different people, so what works for you might not work for someone else.
  • There is no one size fits all in terms of types and range of interventions and support
  • Treatment should be strengths based and not just focus on reducing or removing harms
  • Recovery requires aspirations and hope from you, your family and other people providing support.

In order to support you as effectively as possible we will assess and support you across a number of key areas:

  • Your Physical Health – this is anything relating to your body
  • Your Emotional Health – this is about your wellbeing and what you think, feel and do in response to different situations.
  • Your Family/Friends – this is about how your relationships impact on you, how you impact on them and how they could help you.
  • The Community that you live in – this is about the impact that your community has on you, the impact you have on your community, how your community could help you and how you might be able to help your community
  • Your Growth + Learning – this is about having a better awareness of your emotional health along with formal Education, Training and employment.

Within each of these areas there are a wide range of options, from advice and information through to structured programmes, that you can chose to help you achieve the changes that you want to make.

Our key-working incorporates the following:

  • Triage followed by full assessment
  • Relapse prevention
  • Harm reduction
  • Risk assessment
  • Risk management plans
  • Recovery planning
  • Drug screening
  • Talking therapies (this includes techniques such as motivational interviewing, solution focussed brief therapy and cognitive behavioural approaches)
  • Mapping tools
  • Access to Rehabilitation programmes throughout the UK
  • Access to Detoxification programmes throughout the UK
  • Access to the structured day programme
  • Close liaison with partner agencies, GP and prescribers

Medical prescribing

We are committed to providing safe and effective prescribing for you supported through our clinical governance systems and processes. The aim of any prescribing intervention will depend on the both the medicine which is being prescribed and the context in which it is being used. For most people we will prescribe to you within three working days of assessment.

Prescribing will only take place within the context of a wider recovery plan tailored to the clients’ needs. This will include psychosocial interventions and recovery activities. Structured day programmes

At Addaction we offer a range of day programmes for people to address their drug and alcohol use in more depth. It might seem a bit daunting to discuss your issues with people other than your keyworker, but we know that this can be one of the most helpful ways for you to work towards your recovery. Being able to share your experiences with other people who have been through similar things to you can be very rewarding for both you and others in the group.

Our extensive programme will help you to challenge the way you think and feel about drugs and/or alcohol. It will enable you to be assertive, build your self confidence and your self-esteem whilst educating you about the real risks posed by the drug or alcohol you or your family member is using and give you some real and practical skills to stop using them and be free from dependence.

The sorts of things we do on the programme include:

  • Identifying what is important to you
  • Highlighting personal strengths and resources
  • Keeping diaries
  • Identifying difficulties
  • Developing simple strategies
  • Recording changes
  • Making plans

In order to attend the programme, you will need to be able to:

  • Arrive on time
  • Adhere to the group agreement
  • Participate in the sessions to best of your ability
  • Arrive promptly or send a message in advance if you are unable to attend

Our current programme includes the following courses:

Self Build Programme

This programme covers four areas. They are: Positive thinking; Me, Myself and I; Assertiveness and Relapse Prevention

Understanding Harm Reduction

We cover the Cycle of change; Ambivalence; Harm Reduction (including Naloxone)

Alcohol Awareness

We cover the impact of drinking on you; what units are and how to calculate them; ways of reducing and advice about detox and rehab.

Understanding Substance Misuse

We look at cravings; triggers; the animal brain and take a look at the different kinds of drugs out there

Family Group

This group is run by our recovery champions and volunteers; we offer support for family members affected by drugs or alcohol and support them to deal with the situation as well as tips and ideas how to help and how not to help.

MAP (Mutual Aid Partnership) Group

Our MAP group is run by volunteers and takes and in depth look at building motivation

Women’s Group

Support groups for women only

Non-opiate Group

Covering the things needed to stay well such as goal setting and how to cope with cravings and triggers.

Group sessions

We run a wide range of different groups including:

  • Women’s specific groups
  • Veterans group (for ex-armed forces personnel)
  • Cannabis group
